CALA Vertical Water Training & Group Aquafitness Leadership Completed

Must complete a CALA Vertical Water Training and Group Aquafitness Leadership Training Course (40 - 44 hours). Formerly called Total Track (before January 1, 2003), then called Foundation Part I and II (as of January 1, 2003). It is now to be called CALA Foundations of Vertical Water Training – The Kopansky Method Training Course and CALA Group Aqua Fitness Training and Leadership Specialty Course.

Note: If you have only had the opportunity to participate in one part of the Foundation Course - formerly called the Fast Track Course, then it is imperative that you attend a Vertical Water Training & Group Aquafitness Leadership Course or host a Vertical Water Training course whereby you can choose to apprentice train the first weekend and attend the Group Aquafitness Leadership Training, observing the trainer and learning how the material is facilitated. Then you would have to apprentice train the second weekend on another occasion under the supervision of a designated ‘Master’ Trainer.

*It is highly recommended that you also register and complete the CALA Specialty Courses as soon as possible. If you plan to train a Specialty, such as the CALA Water Running and Aqua Jogging Specialty, you must have attended the course, as a participant and passed the certification with distinction status.

Policy 5
Current CALA Certification or Recertification Status

Must have successfully completed CALA Certification procedure (theory exam & practical assessment – pass with distinction)

Policy 6
Submit resume to apply for CALA Training for Trainers ("T4T") Course

T4T’s for new CALA Instructor Trainers are usually held annually. Costs, locations and details will be forwarded to you once approved as a T4T candidate. Our vision is to build a team of Trainers to facilitate the Vertical Water Training & Group Aquafitness Leadership Training courses, The Healing Waters Program, and a variety of Specialty Courses and Workshops that suit specific trainer expertise.

Policy 7
Apprentice Train

Train sections of the course with a designated ‘Master’ Trainer.

Policy 8
Earn Trainer Status

Once you have, apprentice trained, you will receive feedback on your training, and a decision will be made about your readiness to train "on your own." If your master trainer agrees that you are ready to train on your own, the next time you train the section that you have apprenticed and been approved in, you will be paid.

Policy 9
Earn Full Trainer Status and Signing of Trainers Agreement Form

You must be approved on every section of the course to attain this status. On occasion, two different trainers will train a course due to different areas of expertise. A Trainers Agreement outlining full roles, responsibilities and code of conduct must be reviewed and signed at the beginning of each year.

Policy 10
Training Fees for the Vertical Water Training Course

$25.00 per hour minimum (negotiable with facility.) Travel and accommodation negotiated with facility.

Policy 3

Policy 4
Complete CALA Course, then attain Current Certification / Recertification Status in the Specific Specialty

To conduct a practical assessment, you must hold current certification in the specialty that you are assessing. For example:

1. To assess in Group Aqua Fitness, you must hold current CALA certification in the Group Aqua Fitness.

2. To assess in Water Running and Aqua Jogging, you must hold a current CALA certification in Water Running and Aqua Jogging.

3. To assess in Aqua Arthritis, you must hold a current CALA certification in Aqua Arthritis.

4. To assess in Aqua Kick Box, you must hold a current CALA certification in Aqua Kick Box.

Policy 5
Attend one CALA Assessors Workshop and/or Individualized (One to One Assessor Training session)
Usually held when needed, often in conjunction with a CALA conference.

Policy 6
Apprentice Assess

Co-assess 5 assessments with an approved assessor. Each assessment is a minimum of 30 minutes of observation and a minimum of 15 minutes of face-to-face feedback with the CANDIDATE. This is called shadow assessing. Assess the last 2 - 3 assessments or the 5 assessments, with an approved CALA assessor observing. The master CALA assessor and the CALA apprentice assessor complete a practical assessment form separately. The results are compared and discussed privately. The candidate usually receives a copy of this assessment form from the CALA office. Often a CALA assessor will follow up with the candidate by email or phone to provide more detail about the practical assessment for the candidate.

Policy 7
Earn Assessor Status

Once you have apprentice assessed, you will receive feedback on your assessing, from the approved CALA assessor(s) that you have been working with on CALA assessments, and a decision will be made about your readiness to assess "on your own." If your CALA master assessor agrees that you are ready to assess on your own, the CALA office will be notified in writing by the CALA master assessor and a certification noting your status as a CALA Assessor will be sent to you. The CALA master assessor will also provide the same written feedback to the apprentice.

Policy 8
Earn and Invoice Assessor Fees

Assessment fees vary according to the specialty, the fees are subject to change. For example:

A CALA Group Aqua Fitness Assessment is generally remunerated $25 per assessment. If assessing a candidate who has completed their training through a CALA Provider, the assessor submits an invoice to the CALA Provider for payment (ie. CALA Providers: City of Kitchener, City of Mississauga). If the candidate did not participate in a course offered by a CALA Provider, the assessor submits an invoice to the CALA office for payment.

Note: If the assessor is asked to travel, then travel remuneration must be negotiated directly with the client / candidate or with the provider.

Policy 9
Discuss Results with Candidate

Generally speaking, the assessor shares specific feedback and the results of the assessment, privately, with the candidate.
Note: In the case of a video assessment, it is advised that the assessor provide explicit notes, usually via email (copied to CALA), to the candidate and follow up with a one to one phone call. The CALA assessor can request that the candidate calls at a pre-arranged time.

NOTE: Before conducting a practical assessment, the assessor must contact the CALA office to confirm that the candidate is eligible to be assessed (has a current membership, has completed a course in the specialty area, etc.).

Congratulations on achieving CALA certification status.  This guide explains CALA recertification policies.

Your CALA certification must be renewed every year and will come due on the same date as your membership.  Your CALA membership must be current at the time of recertification. Renewal notices are mailed or emailed prior to the expiry of your membership and certification. Keep track of your expiry date to assist CALA headquarters and ensure your membership and certification remain current.

To achieve recertification eight (8) CALA Continuing Education Credits (CECs) are required per year. You can bank credits and use the credits collected at any time. One hour of education is equal to one CALA CEC.

CECs may be obtained in a number of ways including:

1.   Attendance at CALA conferences, specialty courses, programs, tele-classes and/or workshops are the most common method of achieving the necessary CECs.

2.   Attendance at “other” conferences and workshops that have had approved for credits by CALA.  To determine if an educational event has been accredited by CALA, call or email CALA headquarters.

3.   Petition for CECs: If you have attended a continuing education event related to fitness and healthy living that was not accredited by CALA, you may apply/petition for CECs. The petition fee for non-CALA approved education is $10.00 plus tax per CEC (hour). You must submit the fee and a petition form (see below).

4.   Write an article.  If the article you write is published, on the CALA website equals 3 CALA CECs

Note: If you collect more than 8 CECs, the extra credits can be banked and bumped forward into the next certification period. Remember: Continued education ensures that your skills remain current as the fitness industry is constantly adapting to increased knowledge and client needs and desires.

If you are having problems getting the necessary # of CECs call the CALA office so that we assist you.

When it is time to recertify put together the following:

1.   All CALA certificates and/or conference registration forms that you have collected from CALA educational events you have attended.

2.   Tally the number of CECs you have accumulated.

3.   Include a completed petition form, proof of attendance and the petition fee (where necessary)

4.   Include a recertification fee of 15.00 plus tax (administrative fee). You will be issued a CALA certificate indicating your certification status once your recertification requirements are processed by CALA.  It is advisable to have current first aid and CPR

CALA grants 1 CEC per hour of CALA training.

CALA Continuing Education Credits - You need 8 CECs annually to recertify

How to gather CALA CECs:

  • Attend workshops, specialty courses and/or conferences
  • CALA educational events including courses, workshops and convention are recognized through an accreditation process by provincial, national and international organizations.  Credits are granted through an application process which is specific to each organization.
  • By attending a CALA event you have an opportunity to earn credits with the following organizations (our affiliations are not limited to those listed below):

Petitioning for CEC Approval  -     doc  pdf

If a convention, course or workshop has not been accredited for CALA Continuing Education Credits (CECs) you may petition for CEC approval.

Complete the application form below, one form per session including written verification of the educational credits and hours, then either 1) scan and email it to cala_aqua@mac.com or mail it to CALA Headquarters. If the petition application is approved you will receive validation via email.  A fee of $10 + tax per credit (1 credit per hour) will be charged and payment must be received prior to validation.

For example: for a three-hour workshop the fee is $30 + tax and 3 CALA CECs are awarded

Most educational events facilitated by a suitable trainer/presenter will be acceptable for CEC petition approval.  Master classes and workouts are not available for petition.  Full documentation (proof that you attended the session) detailing the petitioned CEC must be submitted together with the application.

To maintain certification status you must meet the following criteria:

  1. Current CALA member, in good standing. Maintain your membership status on an annual basis.
  2. Gather a minimum of eight CALA CEC's before re-certification date. Attend 8 hours of workshops or other specialty courses. Note: If you attend more than 8 hours of workshops, you can bank your extra credits (CECs) and use them for future recertification. You never lose the credits that you earn. If you are unable to attend workshops or a conference, you can petition for CECs by completing a "Tele-class" or by attending other events that are related to fitness
  3. Pay an annual re-certification fee. Refer to the fee schedule (pdf format)
  4. Conduct a specified number of post aquatic therapy sessions per year (ie. Aqua Arthritis classes)
  5. Click here for further details about recertification
