17, 2008 - Westmount Quebec - Volunteer Position - Arthritic Aquafit Assistant (Westmount
YMCA)
Description
We are looking for a
female volunteer to work on Tuesday afternoons with a blind senior lady,
with reduced mobility, who takes our arthritic aquafit class. The
volunteer would accompany the senior into the changing room - however,
the senior is able to change on her own. Then the volunteer would be
required to get in the shallow end of the pool with the senior to give
her a description (in French) as to what the Aquafit instructor is
doing, so that she can follow along (no swimming – standing in shallow
end). After the class, the volunteer would accompany the senior back
into the changing room - where the senior will use the bathroom &
change on her own, but needs help to manoeuvre through the changing room
corridors. Please note that along with being blind, the senior also uses
a walker. She is an extremely sweet woman & really enjoys taking the
class. Unfortunately, without a volunteer she will not be able to
continue with her exercises which she needs to help rehabilitate her
legs.

GUEST FITNESS INSTRUCTOR POSITION
TECHNICAL REQUIREMENTS
CERTIFICATION - Instructors must hold a current, nationally recognized
certification in GROUP FITNESS.
DIVERSE - Instructors must be well-versed and have experience in the
following formats: LOW IMPACT GROUP EXERCISE, AQUA FITNESS, STEP and
STRETCHING.
ENERGETIC, ENTERTAINING STYLE - Being able to teach BASIC versions of
the above in a DYNAMIC and HIGHLY ENERGETIC style is essential.
EXPERIENCE – Being able to teach to a diverse range of levels and be
especially comfortable with level 1s. Being able to read participants,
adjust accordingly and to make everyone FEEL SUCCESSFUL.
EXCELLENT FORM, PHRASING, CUEING and SAFETY - all screened for and
essential.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS
HEALTHY ROLE MODEL - Instructors should dress in professional attire
with a neat appearance, be fit, healthy and 'in shape'. Please refer to
the ‘Clothing Line’ page on our web site for our line of
professional, functional logo’d wear.
EXCELLENT PEOPLE SKILLS, OUTGOING PERSONALITY, PROFESSIONAL and FRIENDLY
– Instructors must excel in these areas and be able to ‘walk their
talk’ by promoting their classes on-site in an encouraging manner.
Having a ‘visible’ instructor goes hand in hand with being
approachable and encouraging.
‘GO WITH THE FLOW’ attitude – Instructors must be adaptable and
flexible. Travel is an ‘adventure’ and it must be looked at this
way.
ABILITY TO THINK ‘OUTSIDE THE BOX’ - Most fitness-based resorts have
limited equipment but most have steps and mats. Some have other
equipment like stability balls and hand weights however, most do not.
Microphones are not usually part of the sound systems. Most resorts do
have CD players, although taking tapes is always encouraged as back up.
Many classes are held outdoors in more casual settings, most often not
in ‘studios’. Instructors must be flexible in their approach and
enjoy the spirit of movement while adjusting to some of these unique
resort class settings/scenarios.
VERSATILITY - Resort teaching requires versatility. Some resort contacts
can be quite flexible with regards to allowing each instructor to make
small adaptations. Other contacts like the class formats to stay the
same.
INDIVIDUALITY - Instructors are encouraged to bring their own ‘flavor’
to each class. For example, ‘stretching’ can incorporate yoga and
basic pilates concepts while ‘step’, ‘aqua fitness’ and ‘low
impact’ classes can include some body sculpting, interval, tae box and
dance components.
